CBT for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Educational content only. PMDD treatment often involves medical evaluation. Coordinate CBT with clinician guidance. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

PMDD presents with cyclical mood, irritability, and physical symptoms in the luteal phase, remitting after menses. Anticipatory anxiety and self‑criticism can intensify impairment.

Why CBT helps

  • Cycle‑based planning: prepare coping plans for high‑symptom days.
  • Cognitive strategies: rebalance perfectionistic and self‑critical thoughts.
  • Interpersonal skills: communicate needs and set boundaries during peak symptoms.

Journaling prompts

  1. Cycle day / symptom severity (0–100) / coping plan for today.
  2. One balanced thought that counters “I’m failing when I slow down” is…
  3. Specific support I will ask for and when.

Track patterns over months; see How to Journal.

Selected readings

  • CBT approaches tailored for premenstrual disorders; clinician guidelines on diagnosis and care.

When to seek care

Severe mood changes or functional impairment warrant medical assessment; combined treatments are common.
