CBT for Medical & Dental Phobias

Educational content only. For exposure to procedures, seek clinician guidance. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

Fear of medical/dental procedures can lead to avoidance of care. In blood‑injection‑injury phobia, fainting risk is addressed with applied tension.

Why CBT/exposure helps

  • Graded exposure: images → videos → clinic visits → brief procedures.
  • Applied tension: for fainting risk, learn muscle tensing to maintain blood pressure.
  • Safety behavior fading: reduce avoidance and excessive preparation.

Journaling prompts

  1. Exposure step → prediction vs. outcome → discomfort/time to recover.
  2. Applied tension reps completed and effect (if applicable).
  3. One step that brings me closer to necessary care.

Use brief logs; see How to Journal.

When to seek care

If avoidance affects health, work with clinicians to plan safe, supported exposures.
