CBT for Emetophobia (Vomiting Phobia)

Educational content only. Rule out medical contributors as needed. Exposure work benefits from clinician guidance. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

Emetophobia involves intense fear of vomiting or seeing others vomit, leading to avoidance of food, travel, social events, or medical settings.

Why CBT/exposure helps

  • Stimulus hierarchy: progress from words and images to sounds and videos, then real‑life cues.
  • Interoceptive exposure: practice benign nausea‑like sensations (e.g., spinning) to reduce fear of sensations.
  • Safety behavior fading: reduce avoidance rules and excessive checking.

Journaling prompts

  1. Exposure step → prediction vs. outcome → peak discomfort and time to decline.
  2. Which safety behavior did I drop, and what happened?
  3. One valued activity I resumed despite fear.

Use brief logs; see How to Journal.

When to seek care

Significant weight loss or medical concerns require urgent clinician involvement. Collaborative exposure planning increases safety.
