CBT Considerations for Complex PTSD

Safety first. Complex trauma often requires a phased approach under clinician guidance. This page is educational only. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Phased care overview

  • Phase 1 — Safety & stabilization: grounding, emotion regulation, daily structure, and support.
  • Phase 2 — Trauma processing: gradual work on memories and meanings within tolerance.
  • Phase 3 — Integration: reconnect with roles, values, and future goals.

Why CBT helps (adapted)

  • Skills emphasis: distress tolerance and problem‑solving to stabilize life domains.
  • Meaning work: update global beliefs about self, others, and the world.
  • Gradual approach: prioritize present‑day safety and functioning before deeper processing.

Journaling prompts (stabilization‑focused)

Seek clinician support for processing steps; see How to Journal.
